It is only through the support of our volunteers and donors that we are able to give back to our communities. When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in bringing about meaningful change in your community.
YMCA branch volunteers help create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Opportunities include greeting members, helping our administrative teams and lending an extra hand where it’s needed.
ANNUAL CAMPAIGN VOLUNTEER
Generosity comes in many forms, and it's often the best way to support important causes that matter the most in our lives. Each fall, we look for volunteers to lead fundraising teams that help the Association meet our Annual Campaign goals. 100% of the dollars raised toward the YMCA Annual Campaign goes directly to those in need in our own communities.
YOUTH PROGRAM VOLUNTEER
Like kids? So do we. Volunteer in any one of our many youth programs. Help with homework during YMCA After School, teach a creative skill, read books to kids or lead games.
SWIM PROGRAMS VOLUNTEER
YMCA swim programs teach safety, skills and how to enjoy water activities for a lifetime. Volunteers assist with lessons, swim meet timing and other duties.
NURSERY PROGRAMS VOLUNTEER
YMCAs provide child care for parents using the facility. Volunteers are an extra set of hands to rock a baby, or to play games with young children or lead an art project for our older kids. Or volunteer to come and speak about your job or hobby.
MENTORS AND TUTORS
Volunteers help kids with homework, reading and math skills throughout the year through our achievement gap programs, Y Learning and Community Hope. Kids need a friend and a mentor and these one-on-one opportunities serve our community in many ways.
Use your talents to encourage, guide and train young athletes at the YMCA by coaching youth sports including basketball, soccer, T-ball and baseball.
There are many benefits of volunteering including learning new skills, sharing your knowledge and expertise, meeting new people, finding a place to belong and making new friends all while helping your community improve its overall health. All volunteers receive training to ensure safe and efficient operations in our child care, camp, youth, special events and health and fitness programs.
BECOMING A YMCA VOLUNTEER
Becoming a volunteer at the YMCA is a simple three-step process:
- Gather and Submit Clearances/Disclosures
- Complete Trainings (where applicable)
All three steps must be completed before any volunteer activities can be undertaken.
The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh relies on three types of volunteers:
- Program volunteers: individuals involved in coaching, teaching, and program delivery.
- Policy volunteers: members of branch and camp advisory boards.
- Event volunteers: individuals assisting at a stand-alone, one-time event or activity i.e., at the Y’s food distribution programs, or at events such as a race, day of caring, special event, or fundraiser.
All volunteers must first complete a Volunteer Application. Applicants will be contacted by a member of the Mission Advancement team and directed to start gathering the appropriate clearances as detailed in the table below.
