Homeless to Hopeful

When I was homeless, I would frequently walk past and look into the Thelma Lovette YMCA. During this period of my life, there were many days that I would seek out help, as I was addicted to alcohol and drugs and oftentimes, the people at the Y were there for me.

One day, I decided to commit to seek professional help through the Gaudenzia House of the Crossroads and they accepted me into their program. I was happy to find out the Gaudenzia had a relationship with the Y that would help me even more through my lowest moment. Because of their partnership, I have the opportunity to come to the Y daily, which has allowed me to start working on myself on a deeper level.

Prior to being afforded this opportunity, I was 300lbs, depressed, hopeless and helpless. However, through these challenges and with the help of the Y, I am starting to love myself again. Gaudenzia House of the Crossroads helps me in so many ways, but being able to come to the Y has been an integral part of my recovery. Each day, I feel so welcomed by the staff, supported by my neighbors, and empowered to never give up. I may have a major journey ahead of me, but with the strength that the Y has given me through their extra boost of support, I have been able to take small many steps forward. In total, I have lost 12lbs, gained encouragement to keep it moving and am confident that I love myself again, thanks to the joy I get at the Y.
