“All gave some, some gave all. Never Forget.”

The Veterans Wellness Initiative, offered at the Spencer Family Y, is ensuring veterans and spouses in the Greater Pittsburgh community are offered and given support. Through 12-weeks of individualized exercise training, nutrition, and mindfulness, trainers and staff dedicate their time, attention and energy to improving the lives of veterans in the program.

All veterans have a story. Connecting with other veterans is an opportunity to form a community of people who listen and understand. One participant of a past cohort explains, “Some vets came home with physical wounds, but all of us came home with emotional and mental wounds.” Through the creation of this program, the Y hopes to assist in healing those wounds.

Physical health and well-being are important to maintain care of, as is social connection. This program aims to assist with both of these needs, with individualized programs and training exercises for each veteran and cohort. When finishing the 12 weeks, Veterans leave knowing they always have someone to turn to at the Y– whether that’s a staff member, trainer, or fellow veteran.

To celebrate completing 12 weeks of in-person training, the cohort, trainers and staff celebrate with a graduation ceremony. This gives veterans and staff the opportunity to appreciate the work they’ve accomplished, socialize with each other, and honor one another.

The sacrifice our veterans make should never go unnoticed, and we’re making sure veterans get the honor and care they deserve.
