Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Resources
September is Suicide Prevention Month—but at the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, we believe suicide prevention is a year-round priority. Suicide impacts families and individuals across Pittsburgh and beyond, and we are committed to connecting our community with the care, tools, and resources they need.
Local & National Partners
SAFE (Suicide Awareness for Everyone) Task Force of Allegheny County – Working to end the stigma around suicide and increase awareness of community prevention resources.
NAMI Keystone Pennsylvania – Provides mental health education, advocacy, and support groups across the state.
Prevent Suicide PA – Offers statewide initiatives, crisis support, and connections to local mental health groups in Western Pennsylvania.
UPMC Crisis Services – Offers a walk-in crisis center, crisis hotline, and specialized services for children and adolescents.
UpStreet – A free counseling and text support program for teens and young adults, ages 12–22.

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Child Advocacy Center – Specialized care for children who have experienced abuse.
UPMC Children’s Hospital Empowering Teens to Thrive Program – Tools and workshops to help youth build resilience.
Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse (ASCA) Support Group – Peer-led recovery and healing groups.
Family Resources – Counseling, prevention programs, and family support services in Pittsburgh.
Sexual Abuse Support Groups – Confidential spaces for survivors to process and heal.
Fast Facts on Child Abuse & Prevention
CDC: At least 1 in 7 children in the U.S. experience abuse or neglect each year. In 2020, 1,750 children died as a result.
PA Department of Human Services: In 2022, Allegheny County reported 2,360 cases of child abuse, with 190 confirmed cases.
National Children’s Alliance: Over 600,000 children in the U.S. were confirmed victims of abuse and neglect in 2021—the true number is likely much higher due to underreporting.
