Dear valued Steel Tower member,

As the global coronavirus pandemic has continued, its impact on the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh has deepened. Unfortunately, this means we will be permanently closing The YMCA at U.S. Steel Tower effective Wednesday, October 13, 2020.

Since it reopened under pandemic restrictions earlier this year, member activity at the Steel Tower location has been minimal and it is financially impossible to continue providing services in a downtown location to so few members. This is no doubt because many downtown employers are continuing work-from-home policies that limit the number of members who are downtown. Since we cannot predict when this will change, we must act now to ensure that the Y remains financially self-sustaining.

We recognize this is not the news you (or we) would prefer to share. You are a valued Y member and your membership and support of the Y are critically important to our ability to provide the Y experience.

Please note that the closure of this site will not impact the Before and Afterschool Enrichment programs, Pod Learning sites, food distribution, affordable housing or popular Summer Day Camp programs that the Y offers in and around the city. We look forward to continuing to serve our community in these and many other important ways.

In recognition of your valued role in the Y community, we are able to continue your Y membership at your current rate through March 31, 2021 at any other branch. We have also developed a suite of virtual programming, Y Live, that is available to you. We continue to add classes based on membership feedback. You can view virtual program options at https://www.pittsburghymca.org/ylive.

Additionally, all members who kindly continued their membership draft through the closure, will receive a tax receipt for the full value of their draft while the branch was closed. We thank you for your very generous support which helped sustain essential services including affordable housing, food distribution and learning pods. Tax receipts will be emailed to members before the end of the year.

Again, thank you for your continued membership and support of the Y. If you have questions about this necessary change, please call 412-745-9622 or click here and a Membership Team member will be in touch with you.

Sincerely,

Greg Swetoha
